Acadia Federal Credit Union was chartered as Fort Kent Federal Credit Union in 1963. Primarily aimed at serving the parishioners of St. Louis Catholic Church in Fort Kent, it continued to grow creating a strong tradition of member service. Eventually the Credit Union welcomed the greater Fort Kent area as a field of membership.

More recently, on February 1st, 2006 the Credit Union merged with La Vallée Federal Credit Union, established in Madawaska in 1964. Prior to this, La Vallée was itself the result of mergers of Madawaska, Frenchville and Grand Isle Credit Unions. Together the two credit unions became Acadia Federal Credit Union with over 8,500 members. On January 1st, 2007 Acadia Federal Credit Union merged again with St Francis Community Credit Union.

The members now are spread throughout the entire St. John River valley.  Having experienced such significant growth, the Credit Union has not changed its principles of strong devotion to its members and developing professional products and services.
